Bass Virtuoso Shaun Munday Announces Second Album ‘Love / Magic’

Shaun Munday is releasing Love / Magic, his second album on Friday, December 16th. The album will be available for pre-order on iTunes starting on Friday, December 2nd. Two songs from the album, “Love or Magic” and “If I’m Wrong” are available for instant download when purchased during iTunes pre-order.

The album, titled Love / Magic, features the powerful vocals and bass guitar wizardry Munday has become known for, but with the addition of a conventional rhythm section sprinkled throughout. Members of his touring band make appearances on select tracks (“Say Something,” “If I’m Wrong”) as well as Munday himself performing on multiple instruments. The album’s parting moment, “Interlude (Outro: Fam Jam),” is a brief sampling of the energetic group interplay that defined his formative years.

Munday describes the album as, “an homage to the sounds of my early childhood. It’s a love-letter to the music and artists that inspired me to pursue this craft.” He evokes the styles that peppered his parents’ vinyl collection with the slick R&B funk of “Losing My Cool” and the vintage, jazz-inflected soul of “Love or Magic.” A nod and a wink are given to his bass heroes with the instrumental pyrotechnics of the interludes “Victory” and “Swoosh.” With Love / Magic, Munday offers an intimate glimpse into the musical evolution of one of the most unique artists on the scene today and an exciting exhibition of things to come.

Munday began performing solo in February 2016 and his debut album, Shaun Munday, was released in 2017 to rave reviews. Bass Player Magazine said, “Munday proves that he’s going to be a bass heavyweight, as his flawless slap work and his melodically challenging lines are only ever outshined by his buttery crooning.”

Munday tours internationally performing solo and has opened for Andra Day, Corinne Bailey Rae and Lalah Hathaway. Prior to performing solo, Munday shared the stage with Mary Wilson of The Supremes, blues legend Robert Cray, reggae royalty Aston Barrett and The Wailers (Bob Marley’s band), country music star Collin Raye, Devon Allman and Yonrico Scott of the Royal Southern Brotherhood.

Munday captures the raw, emotive essence of his influencers in Love / Magic – Otis Redding, Al Green, Donny Hathaway and Marvin Gaye. A nod to the soulful sounds of his stylistic predecessors and with an eye to the future, Munday explores the possibilities/potential of his chosen instrument in a provocative yet accessible fashion. Munday’s unconventional approach to bass and performance comes naturally. After years of formal study in a variety of musical genres and working to cultivate a solid foundation in traditional electric bass techniques, Munday returned to the style that first drew him to the instrument.

Munday is an alumnus of the Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA where he studied and performed with some of the greatest artists and educators in the industry including John Mayer, Esperanza Spalding, Matthew Garrison (Herbie Hancock), Antonio Sanchez (Pat Metheny) and Jetro Da Silva (Whitney Houston).
