Rapper Schoolboy Q has announced the release of his new album Blue Lips, which will be released on March 1st. To preview his sixth studio album, the rapper has released two singles, which feature the bass playing of Jordan Brooks (Ex-poets, Pachyman, Kolumbo, Albert Hammond Jr, Lulu).
Brooks says of the sessions, “I did several weeks of sessions with Schoolboy Q in the studio back in 2020 and 2021 after DJ Fu called me in to play bass on one of the songs they were working on. They liked what I did so they invited me back the next day, which subsequently turned into me being there everyday. I had pretty recently moved to LA and it was some of the best music of my life, getting to jam with Q, rapping into a handheld mic standing right next to me and hearing his voice live improvising while I played bass. Lots of different musicians and artists and producers coming through every day, so much talent and creativity packed into one room. And they all loved live bass. Fast forward a few years and one of the producers I met on the session, Tae Beast, asked me to play bass on this beat, just a few weeks ago. I was out of town but fortunately I had my remote recording gear with me. I sent him back a few takes and then heard a couple days later that it was on the album. I used my Serek Midwestern with Labella flatwound strings. I’ve been using that and my Hofner club bass for pretty much everything these days. They both have such a mellow, fat sound that just sounds natural and beautiful to me.”
