Pearl Jam have released their anxiously awaited new album, Gigaton [Monkeywrench/Republic Records], today. Get it at www.pearljam.com.
Earlier this week, the band previewed the record on a special dial-in hotline: 585-20-PEARL (585-207-3275). Phoning the line allowed fans to listen to tracks in full before Gigatonโs official arrival. Following singles โDance of the Clairvoyantsโ and โSuperblood Wolfmoon,โ they also shared โQuick Escapeโ as the final instant grat on Wednesday.
At Metacritic, Gigaton registered the groupโs second highest cumulative critical scoreโonly bested by their diamond-certified debut, Ten. Among numerous positive reactions, Associated Press exclaimed, โPearl Jam come roaring back with superb new album.โ In a four-out-of-five star review, Rolling Stone wrote, โThe group has blended the miasmic angst of โJeremyโ and โAliveโ with a sense of tenderness and even flashes of hope.โ UPROXX promised, โPearl Jam is reliable on โGigatonโ at a moment when nothing else is,โ and Spin christened it โTheir best album since the late nineties.โ
Gigaton represents Pearl Jam at the peak of progression. From moments of guitar-fueled catharsis such as โWho Ever Saidโ through the icy absolution of โRiver Cross,โ the lyrics, riffs, and rhythms transmit a message of hope, culminating on Eddie Vedderโs final words, โHere and nowโฆwonโt hold us downโฆshare the lightโฆwonโt hold us down.โ
Produced by Josh Evans and Pearl Jam, Gigaton marks the bandโs first studio album since GRAMMYยฎ award-winning, Lightning Bolt, which was released on October 15, 2013. Internationally, the album is available and distributed by Universal Music Group.
