New for 2023 and the latest addition to the Bass Workshop Series, Ibanez introduces a completely new offering in the form of the SRC6MS. Based on the original SRC6 Crossover that was first introduced in 2014, this new iteration quite simply adds a new dimension with multi-scale construction. Within the Ibanez lineup, this model is referred to as a “Crossover” bass for its ability to cover the sonic range between conventional guitars and basses, but players may be more familiar with this type of instrument as a Bass VI. Currently, this is the first and only instrument of its kind to be made available on the mass production market.
Functionally, it splits the difference between a baritone guitar and a short-scale bass, making it extremely useful for guitarists who want to explore ultra-low frequency riffs or bassists seeking something leaning slightly more towards the treble side of things. For the most part, this bass shares similar specifications with the original SRC6 but with some obvious changes made to accommodate the multi-scale design. First, the scale lengths run from 28.5” on the first string to 30” even on the 6th string, and the bridge was updated to a Mono-rail design. Other changes include the use of Bartolini BH2 pickups and a Rosewood fretboard. This instrument is a notable departure from prior Ibanez designs and represents a clear evolution in the offerings of the Bass Workshop series.
