David Garfield has enlisted Marcus Miller to take on cover of Joe Sample’s “Rainbow Seeker.” The two recorded the track in the summer of 2020. Set for release on October 16th, this fresh arrangement of Sample’s classic composition also includes drummer Steve Jordan (John Mayer), percussionist Lenny Castro and the late jazz guitarist Chuck Loeb (Stan Getz, Steps Ahead, Fourplay). The track was recorded by Al Schmitt at the iconic Capitol Studios in Hollywood, mixed by Steve Sykes and appears on Garfield’s album Jazz Outside The Box.

As David Garfield explains, “Joe Sample was one of my mentors and I had the great pleasure of writing, recording and performing with him, both for his projects and mine. I saw him play for the first time with the legendary Oliver Nelson while I was still in high school, back in St. Louis. He blew my mind!”

“After moving to Los Angeles, I finally got to meet him at “The Baked Potato” – a local hangout – when he stopped by to get a drink while my band was performing. We instantly struck up a good rapport and the next time he came in I was playing with my band Los Lobotomys, with Jeff Porcaro and Nathan East, and we asked him to come up and sit in. One of my biggest thrills was recording with him for George Benson’s Guitar Man record which I produced and played on.”

“‘Rainbow Seeker’ was always one of my favorite tunes and it’s actually kind of difficult to play, as the chords take different turns than normally would be expected. Having seen Steve Jordan (drums) perform back in the ‘70s, while he was with Hubert Laws and I was with Freddie Hubbard on the same gig, I always wanted to record with him, and Marcus Miller was always one of my favorite musicians and influences, so I was so thrilled when they agreed to play on this as well! Dean Parks who played rhythm guitar on the original record with Joe is also with us here. ”

“Once when Joe and I were performing at a jazz festival in Africa together, at the after party I went up to jam with the house band and quickly wrote out a chord chart for “Rainbow Seeker” and had them play it with me. Joe was at the bar having a drink, and when he recognized his song, he turned around, jumped up, came right up to the bandstand and exclaimed, “What the f*** are you guys doing?”

“I loved Joe and treasure the times we spent together making music and hanging out, always having fun and laughing together. I will always miss him. We recorded this song to keep his memory alive and pay tribute to him.”

David Garfield performs in the Los Angeles music scene. He has recorded with Smokey Robinson, Cher, Larry Carlton, Steve Lukather, Spinal Tap, George Benson and The Manhattan Transfer. He has played with Freddie Hubbard, Boz Scaggs, Oleta Adams, Brenda Russell, Natalie Cole, and Michael Bolton.
