As the world continues to recover from the Coronavirus, we're all finding ourselves in unfamiliar territory given the subsequent lockdown that is keeping us off of stages and confined to our homes. Luckily, there's comfort in the fact that we're all in this together, and that there are still many outlets for us musicians to keep us active and sane throughout this quarantine. We're checking in with bass players from all over the world to see what they're doing to stay entertained, healthy, productive, and safe during this trying time.
Bass Player: Brian Marshall
Bands & Artists: Alter Bridge
Home: Fort Walton Beach, Florida
How have you been passing time during the lockdown?
I’m building a small studio at my house while recording song ideas and practicing a lot.
What have you been working on in terms of your bass practice routine?
I mostly experiment with different drum loops to help focus on timing and inspiration. However, my current obsession is pentatonics.
What music, songs, recordings, artists, bass players have you been listening to as a source of comfort and inspiration that you can recommend?
“Whitehouse Road” by Tyler Childers. I can’t get enough of that song. Also, Tully Kennedy of Jason Aldean’s band. Great tone and tasty licks.
What bass gear have you been playing and trying out?
I’ve been focusing on Logic Pro X and the different tones I can get through the software. Amp modeling and effects have come a long way in the digital world.
What non-music activities books, shows, movies, or workout recommendations do you have?
We live near the beach so we spend a lot of time on the water. It’s also nice to have our gym reopened. Any exercise regimen I find helps with my overall well being. Waco and You are awesome on Netflix.
What projects do you have coming up when the world gets going again?
Alter Bridge will resume touring into next year, and I’m also working on a country project. Stay tuned for that!
What advice can you offer fellow bassists for staying positive and keeping morale high?
Surround yourself with people you love, admire and respect, and that share a similar path in life.
