When a globally recognised, multifaceted talent like Yolanda Charles MBE, the renowned bassist and composer whose career spans collaborations with from BB King to Hans Zimmer —announces a new album by Project pH, it marks a significant moment.
In the group and across this new collection, Charles’ main protagonist is producer and guitarist Nick Linnik. Known for his blazing guitar playing, his intricate arrangements, programming and sound-design have shaped the album. Highly skilled Keyboardist Hamish Balfour, whose innovative work has earned him acclaim in jazz and electronic circles has added the final touches to the high performance quality of the finished record. Charles & Linnik working together since July 2022 during their long running Ronnie Scott’s residency, have forged a unique and compelling fusion of genres, set to redefine musical boundaries. Those new parameters are obvious from the opener, ‘NO ID’, which draws influence from many directions, has touches of 80’s jazz fusion and 70s funk, underpinned with tight. dynamic progressive flourishes – with the vocals of Paris Ruel and Adeola Shyllon highlighting the more soulful, funky element of Yolanda’s deeply impressive musical spectrum.
Across the entire album, the stand out moments are many, of particular note is “Only You” – a mellow groove pushes this along, suitably complemented by Vanessa Haynes whose vocals glide effortlessly over Yolandas’ signature bass and Nick’s blues/funk guitar, creating a laid-back, yet infectious rhythm which makes the song gentle but also highly dynamic.
“That Ain’t Any Way” – Funky, soulful, and brimming with attitude, this track is a lyrical standout penned by Yolanda. The song is driven by her tight bass work, while Imaani Saleem, celebrated for her work with the iconic Incognito, delivers the vocals with a perfect blend of sass and emotion.
“It’s Not You” is a masterclass in chilled-out heartbreak. Haydn Bardoe lends his emotive vocals to this reflective piece, capturing the vulnerability and complexity of a relationship gone wrong. Bardoe brings depth to this poignant tale of love lost, the kind of song that lingers long after the final note. In direct contrast “Until My Dying Day” hits hard with its opening funky rock riff – played in tight unison by Nick and Yolanda, mirroring their effortless musical partnership. Anchored by the explosive drumming of Nico Py, the song pulses with an irresistible intensity. Py’s sharp, driving beats lock in perfectly with Yolanda bass, creating a solid backbone, and the result is bold, intense and memorable.
Each track on Acid Funk features its own distinct character, at its core is a bold fusion of ideas, sounds and lyrics which come together to create an immersive experience – brought to the table by the guest performers and honed by the core of Charles, Linnik and Balfour into an collection that feels both cohesive and refreshingly individual.
