With a storied career spanning over two decades, Brazilian bassist Pops Magellan is ready to take center stage with the release of her newest single, “Deep Thoughts.” “Deep Thoughts” is the second single off her anticipated solo EP, Damage. It will be released on streaming platforms on November 7, 2024.
“Deep Thoughts” is a genre-defying fusion of Brazilian maracatu melodies, live and electronic drums, and funk infused with rock and spacey soundscapes. The result is a complex, yet danceable track rich in texture and intricate grooves. For this track, Magellan specifically brought in Noa Kahn, an acclaimed drummer from LA’s Jazz and Groove scene. Noa Kahn’s virtuosity and fierce spirit is on full display. Kahn’s presence on the track is vital, not just as a drummer, but as a fierce and unstoppable woman who has overcome immense challenges to make her mark in the music industry, like Pops Magellan herself. Sisters from another mister…
Magellan’s melodic and funk bass lines, synth work and modern production are on full display, weaving throughout the track creating an emotional depth and dynamic energy. The basis for the track comes from Magellan’s own challenges with overthinking coupled with the hopes and determination to break free of this vicious mental cycle. The result is a beautifully woven, intricate sonic landscape. Co-producing with Magellan on the track is Randy Emata (Kamasi Washington, Erik Benet) who also provides added synths, and grammy winner Taylor Graves (Kimbra, Thundercat) adding expansive textures and melodic sounds. “Deep Thoughts” embodies Magellan’s continual growth as an artist proving she is a true creative powerhouse. Bassist, Producer, Composer: Magellan has truly done it all.
Like her namesake, Pops Magellan has traveled all over the world for her art. From her humble beginnings in Brazil as a member of her family band to resident bass player on the popular Brazilian variety show “Adnight Show,” now to playing sold out stadiums such as Wembley Stadium and hallowed halls such as the Royal Albert Hall, she has captivated audiences with her redefining sound of groove, funk and R&B. She has played with artists as diverse as Adam Lambert, Willow, and Avril Lavigne. Playing the world’s largest and most iconic stages has solidified Pops Magellan as a world-class musician.
Music is not the only creative outlet for Magellan. This solo project gives her the platform to showcase her visual art as well. All imagery for the new solo material has been created by and/or produced by Magellan herself, using photos and collages she has produced along the way. This combination of musical and visual creative talents does lend themselves to the potential of many more opportunities to come.
Pops Magellan’s EP is scheduled to be released in Summer of 2025. With unique grooves, funk, innovative bass lines, oozy synths, and blues-inspired guitar, Magellan has created a unique musical styling that is wholly her own. Along for the ride is Justin Brown (Thundercat) on drums and Artur Menezes on guitar. Stanley Randolph, drummer extraordinaire, (Stevie Wonder) is featured on the tracks “African Dust” and “Drive Complaining.” Swatkins (Scary Pockets, Allen Stone) appears on the next single, “Funk Karma”. The EP is a kaleidoscope of sonic textures surely to please.
“Deep Thoughts is about those times when our minds hold us back, when thoughts start to ferment, keeping us from expanding until we’re stuck in a fog. This track is a journey through that mental loop, capturing the tension of being held back by your own mind and the release that comes when you finally break through. It’s about finding clarity and hope on the other side and surrendering to the beautiful process of acceptance and evolving.” Pops Magellan
