For anyone thats ever been to New Orleans, they know there’s live music everywhere you go whether in a venue a bar on Bourbon or Frenchmen St. Or even a brass band right in the middle of the road. As always the day before the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival and a few days following the second weekend, there were numerous after shows at various venues and Bass Magazine was on hand to cover a few.

On April 28th, the Saenger Theater hosted Lettuce (Erick “E.D.” Coomes) and Tower of Power (Marc van Wageningen). April 29th was one of the biggest lineups of legends with the Take Me to the River All-Stars at the Joy Theater. The lineup included an opening set by George Porter Jr. and a surprise guest on drums which was none other than the Grateful Dead’s Bill Kreutzmann. The All-Stars included performances by Porter again, blues legend Bobby Rush, the Gospel Queen of New Orleams Irma Thomas, Stax records’ first artist William Bell, Big Chief Bo Dollis Jr, Galactic’s Eric Krasno and Anjelika “Jelly” Joseph, Joe Ashlar, Luther Dickinson, Dumpstaphunk’s Ivan and Ian Neville, and more. Sunday night 80’s teen idol Tiffany played the Parish Room at House of Blues with Candlebox bassist Adam Kury. Next came the Daze Between which is the term for the days between Jazz Fest weekend but there’s also a festival of that name. One of the biggest shows of Monday night (5/1) was Shorty Fest at the historic Tipitina’s including Tank & The Bangas, Galactic, and Trombone Shorty who had his plaque unveiling outside the venue before the show like a Hollywood Walk of Fame induction. During the Daze Between, shows began in the afternoon and started as late as 2 A.M.

At 3 P.M. Tuesday (5/2), Tipitina’s hosted Zildjians 400th Anniversary party with Dumpstaphunk’s Tony Hall in the house band. Throughout the day Tuesday at the Deutsche House The Patry!!! took place starting at 11 A.M. with Little Freddie King and at 5:45 was George Porter’s all-star band with Anders Osborne guesting. The closing set was Big Chief Joseph Boudreaux Jr. In the evening Tuesday, George Porter played again, but this time at the Toulouse theater with Joe Marcinek’s Dead Funk Summit in the first set and Tony Hall played the second set. On Wednesday the third day of the NOLA Crawfish Festival took place the NCF Allstars closing it out. The band consists of George Porter Jr, Galactic’s Stanton Moore, Ivan Neville, and Anders Osborne.

Weekend 2 Friday night (5/5) New Orleans Legends Art Neville (The Meters) and Dr. John were honored at the Civic Theater with the Poppa Funk & The Night Tripper show opening with former Galactic singer Erika Falls. The lineup included Porter Jr.,Daniels III, Ivan and Ian Neville, Alvin Ford Jr., John Cleary and more. At the Fillmore Saturday night was the third and final show for Joe Russo’s Almost Dead with Dave Dreiwitz. Dumpstaphunk celebrated their 20th anniversary Sunday night at Tipitina’s.
