MonoNeon continues to push funk into unpredictable territory with his new song “Tha Dumb Stuff,” featuring the legendary George Clinton and MonoNeon’s Grandma Liz on vocals. Entirely produced by MonoNeon himself, the track highlights his signature mix of off-kilter funk, Southern soul textures, and experimental minimalism — with MonoNeon handling the vocals, the bass, and quirky keyboard and synth arrangements that give the song its strange, magnetic personality.
Originally tracked in 2022 in Tallahassee, Florida at George Clinton’s studio, “Tha Dumb Stuff” later evolved into something bigger after MonoNeon revisited the recordings and reshaped the production into a completely new sonic space. The result feels both homemade and cosmic — raw in spirit and deeply layered in musical detail. Trey Lewd contributes backing vocals that help widen the track’s hypnotic atmosphere, while drummer TaRon Lockett brings that gangsta groove to the song.
Lockett’s funky drum appearance on the record also carries personal significance. He was the first person to pick MonoNeon up from the airport in Minneapolis when the bassist was invited to Paisley Park to work with Prince and Judith Hill — a full-circle moment that adds emotional weight to the collaboration.
“Tha Dumb Stuff” continues MonoNeon’s ongoing connection to the P-Funk universe while remaining fully rooted in his own musical language: colorful, Southern, humorous, and emotionally honest all at once. With George Clinton’s unmistakable presence and Grandma Liz adding warmth and humanity with her verse, the song sounds like a family gathering transmitted through MonoNeon’s distorted-pitch shifted bass, crooked synthesizers, and futuristic whateva the fyuck.
