For 30 years, Grammy-winning artist, Meshell Ndegeocello’s music has cast an unflinching gaze on love, race, sexuality and religion. Her new album out in August, No More Water: The Gospel of James Baldwin, zooms out to focus on the love of humanity as inspired by the writer and civil rights activist.
Her performance includes three songs from that album, starting with โTravel,โ which features Kenita Millerโs swirling whispers alongside Jake Shermanโs organ and Ndegeocelloโs bass, which ushers us into her church service. โThus Sayeth The Lorde,โ references the writings of Audre Lorde: โIf I did not define myself for myself, Iโd be crunched into other peopleโs fantasies for me and eaten alive.โ This conviction has been the binding agent of Ndegeocelloโs career. Releasing her debut album at a time when many of the women who dominated Black music were singers who adopted an ultra-feminine aesthetic, as a bassist and vocalist she gallantly eschewed that standard for androgyny, fully embracing her queer, two-spirit identity.
โLoveโ continues this theme, urging you to allow love to take over and accept yourself in the face of existential crisis. The final songs of Ndegeocelloโs Tiny Desk Concert are fan favorites. First, weโre sent off into space with the playful โVirgo,โ from Ndegeocelloโs album The Omnichord Real Book. Then she brings us back to Earth with the yearning โOutside Your Door.โ

Meshell Ndegeocelloโs new Blue Note album No More Water: The Gospel Of James Baldwin is a striking homage to the eminent writer and activistJames Baldwin to be released on his Centennial: August 2, 2024. The visionary work is at once a musical experience, a church service, a celebration, a testimonial, and a call to action. With No More Water, Ndegeocello embarks on a prophetic musical odyssey that transcends boundaries and genres, delving headfirst into race, sexuality, religion, and other recurring themes explored in Baldwinโs canon. Following 2023โs The Omnichord Real Book, her acclaimed Blue Note debut which won the inaugural GRAMMY Award for Best Alternative Jazz Album, the multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, and producer renders an immersive and palpable document that is as sagacious, unabashed, and introspective as Baldwin was in life. Co-produced by Ndegeocello and guitarist Chris Bruce, No More Water features some of the bassistโs frequent collaborators including Bruce, vocalist Justin Hicks, saxophonist (and Omnichord producer) Josh Johnson, keyboardist Jebin Bruni, and drummer Abe Rounds. Also appearing on various songs are vocalist Kenita-Miller Hicks, keyboardists Jake Sherman and Julius Rodriguez, and Executive Director of the NYCPS Arts Office and trumpeter Paul Thompson. The album also showcases powerful spoken word by venerated poet Staceyann Chin and Pulitzer Prize-winning author and critic Hilton Als.
