Rapper A$AP Rocky has just unveiled the second single from his album, Don’t Be Dumb, with the release of “Ruby Rosary” featuring J. Cole. Playing bass on the track is Jordan Brooks, known for his work with Schoolboy Q, Ex-poets, Pachyman, Kolumbo, Albert Hammond Jr, and Joba.

We caught up with Brooks to talk about the session:

“I was in New York playing a show with Pachyman and I stayed a few days extra to just hang out. On the last day my girlfriend and I were at the airport about to come back to LA and I got a call from my friend Rex Kudo, who is a great producer, asking if I was still in New York by chance and could I come to this session? I was literally in line for security but I decided to leave the airport and hop on the train and go straight to the studio. Fortunately I had my favorite bass with me, my Hofner club bass that I use all the time.

I showed up and met Rocky and played on the song they needed and they dug it. Rocky was like you should stick around if you can, and they played me some other stuff and one of the songs was ‘Ruby Rosary’ and I was blown away by the sound and Rocky’s flow on it. I was psyched when they said ‘maybe you should try some bass on this.’ I did a take and it stuck and that’s what you hear on the record.

Rocky asked me to come back the next day and it turned into a four day session. We had so much fun walking around the city, recording, listening to Bill Evans and Miles Davis, and talking about music. Jon Batiste came one night and we even all showed up to Smalls Jazz Club and sat in and jammed. It was a surreal weekend and I’m so glad Rex called me and I decided to go.”
