From John Ferrara: Here is a sneak peak at my new project Mono Means One. Though I’m in the rehearsal process with a killer drummer and keyboardist to help me see these compositions though in the live performance sector, I wanted to share with you all the process of writing for this project with this video of my song “It Covered the Sky.”
Filmed and Edited by Nick Balkun at NukLab Studios
The songs created in “Mono Means One” are primarily tapping pieces of mine that I’ve fully orchestrated by utilizing a myriad of bass techniques and effects. When I compose tapping pieces I always have melodies, harmonies and drum parts going on in my head, though I can’t always express all of them. So this project allows me to pull from some of the weird techniques I’ve developed over time to see these ideas through to full compositions.
The inspiration for this project came from desperately wanting to be able to compose full band or orchestral pieces on the bass the same way a pianist would on piano. All of the pieces in this project are ones that I can hear for a band. In “It Covered the Sky” I use tapping, volume swells, finger style and more to create a broad sonic palette by masking the instruments role and tone.
The full band version of Mono Means One will start touring in early July! I hope you guys enjoy “It Covered the Sky”, and hope to see you on the road!
