In gearing up to release her anticipated new album, Starchild Vol. 1, Divinity Roxx has just dropped two new singles with “Wake Up” and “Rock It Out.” The groove-filled, feel good hits are just a taste of what’s to come on the full LP.
“Starchild is my first concept album and it feels like the origin story of all my previous works,” says Roxx.
“The album is deeply rooted in storytelling, following the life of an 8-year-old little girl who was born in a spiral star-producing galaxy far away. She comes to Earth as a human child who has forgotten all the stuff inside of her that makes her magical. But through the power of music, she begins to discover and uncover her true nature. Her teacher recognizes her potential and that she hides it by being a class clown. Through a series of quantum leaps and meetings with different people, including members of her own family, she begins to sense who she is and what makes her so special. Laurie Berkner encourages her to follow the music. Her uncle puts a bass in her hand, and she meets Bootsy Collins, who’s conducting a choir of flowers in another dimension where he gives her “the funk”. The album is fun and imaginative. It reminds us that we are all made of stars, literally and figuratively, and I hope it encourages us all to connect with our star power within.”
August 28 marks the release of Starchild Vol. I, the imaginative new musical adventure from two time GRAMMY nominated recording artist, composer, educator, and author Divinity Roxx. Blending hip-hop, funk, storytelling, and boundless imagination, Starchild takes kids and families on a cosmic journey where each song reveals another chapter in one extraordinary girl’s search to discover who she truly is, and the star power that’s been inside her all along.
At the heart of the story is Starchild, a young girl who appears to be an ordinary kid on Earth but is, in fact, a celestial being from a distant galaxy. As mysterious clues begin to reveal her true origins, music becomes the key that unlocks an adventure across dimensions, unforgettable mentors, and the truth about who she really is. Along the way, she discovers that the extraordinary power she’s been searching for has been within her all along.
With Starchild Vol. Divinity Roxx builds on the joyful foundation of her two GRAMMY nominated family albums, Ready Set Go! and World Wide Playdate, while taking her most ambitious creative leap yet. Drawing from the funk, hip-hop, soul, and fearless musicianship that have defined her career, she invites young listeners into a musical world that’s imaginative, adventurous, and unmistakably her own.
“I truly feel like I was destined to make this album, not just for the little girl in me who was always chasing the light within, but for all the Starchildren out there on the verge of discovering their own inner light, their brilliance, and their passion,” says Divinity Roxx. “It’s already inside of you, just waiting for you to choose it.”
As the story unfolds, each song opens another chapter of Starchild’s journey. From her arrival on Earth in “Starchild Intro” and the energetic “Wake Up – Rock N Roll Time,” she struggles to find her place before discovering her musical gifts when her uncle places a bass guitar in her hands in “Yeah Yeah Yeah” and “Rock It Out.” Dreams begin revealing clues about her true identity in “Starlight,” eventually leading her to another dimension where she meets legendary funk pioneer Bootsy Collins as the unforgettable “Number One Funkateer,” who entrusts her with a gift no one can ever take away. By the album’s end, songs like “Super Girl,” “Shake Off the Blues,” “Life Is But a Dream,” and the joyous finale “Welcome to the Cookout” celebrate confidence, resilience, family, community, and the power of embracing exactly who you are.
Helping bring Starchild’s universe to life is an all-star group of collaborators including legendary funk pioneer Bootsy Collins, beloved family music icon Laurie Berkner, GRAMMY Award-winning producer Jerry Wonda (Fugees, Shakira), longtime collaborator Wayne Gerard, Canadian songwriter Aiza, and Divinity’s own mother, nieces, nephews, cousins, family friends, and the Atlanta-based Genesis Academy Cheer Squad. Together they create a rich musical landscape that reflects the album’s celebration of imagination, connection, and belonging.
The visual world of Starchild is every bit as imaginative as its music. The album artwork was illustrated by award-winning children’s book artist R. Gregory Christie, a two-time New York Times Best Illustrated Book honoree, and designed by acclaimed photographer and Prince’s longtime art director Steven Parke, completing the album’s bold visual identity.
Starchild Vol. I will be available on all major streaming platforms beginning August 28.
