Orlando le Fleming has released a new single featuring his band Romantic Funk and Coldplay’s Chris Martin. It’s an electrifying, chordal bass-led cover of “What’s New,” the 1939 standard written by the great bassist Bob Haggart, with lyrics by Johnny Burke. Offers Orlando, ‘What’s New’ has been a favorite standard ballad of mine for a long time and this arrangement—especially the rhythmic groove for the vamp—is inspired by the Ahmad Jamal Trio version on At the Pershing: But Not for Me [Argo, 1958], with Israel Crosby on bass.” He continues, “As my band members were all in different parts of the world, I decided to do a video track where everyone records in their home studios. Starting with me, it was recorded in Crowborough, England; Adelaide, Australia; Denton, Texas; London, and New York City. Everyone improvised their parts—with some direction—off the bass part. I’m playing my Moollon J-Classic 4-string with DR Lo-Riders through an Xotic RC Booster pedal and and MXR Carbon Copy Analog Delay pedal. Chris Martin is an old friend from school and I recently backed him on upright at a gig in New York City. I sent the track to him—imagining a little trademark Chris Martin falsetto vocal part at the end—and he loved it.” Orlando and Romantic Funk will have their album release show at Ronnie Scott’s in London on November 4th.
