Ben Kenney (former Incubus/Roots) releases new single Fires from his upcoming album via Ghetto Crush Industries.

The single marks his return to music after being diagnosed with a brain tumor three years ago. Despite a successful surgery to remove the tumor, the procedure left Kenney permanently deaf in one ear with partial facial paralysis. Soon after the surgery, his father — his biggest supporter — passed away.

“The last few years have been really challenging,” says Kenney. “I needed a hard reset.” Kenney left his former band, Incubus, in 2023 to focus on his recovery and his own projects. “I called Mike Einzinger and thanked him for the chance to be a part of their world. It was now time to step into myself.”

With one working ear, Kenney got back in the studio and forged the experience into a new album. Fires is the first single and speaks to the tumultuous journey of the last few years.

“It’s one of the hardest songs for me to sing because I feel like I’m still living it,” Kenney says, “but it’s all very cathartic for me — music is a great way to turn healing into something that can be shared with others.”
