Craft Recordings announces a new YouTube series that pairs the biggest names in music with classic vinyl albums

Craft Recordings announces a new YouTube series that pairs the biggest names in music with classic vinyl albums, called Craft Recordings Presents: Shoplifting. The weekly series, which debuted with its first three episodes this week, catches a variety of visiting artists and tastemakers on Craft’s surveillance cameras, as they raid the record bins at the label’s Los Angeles headquarters. As they go through their loot, they’ll review their haul, offering insight into their musical heroes and early influences, while sharing anecdotes along the way. Artists will have their pick of Craft’s vast catalog of titles – from foundational jazz and rock albums to beloved soundtracks to punk classics – from such hallowed imprints as Stax, Prestige, Fantasy, Fania, Nitro, and Vanguard. The initial three episodes of the ongoing series feature alt-rockers Taking Back Sunday, jazz and fusion icon Chick Corea, and the legendary producer Scott Litt, while future installments will include the likes of Major Lazer’s Walshy Fire, Fran Healy of Travis, The Manhattan Transfer, The Zombies, and Poncho Sanchez, among others.

This episode features bassist Miles Mosley and drummer Tony Austin, co-founders of the Los Angeles collective The West Coast Get Down, taking fans on a musical journey, discussing classic vinyl albums (including getting nostalgic over Vince Guaraldi Trio to Jungle Fire! by Pucho & The Latin Soul Brothers to Caravan by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers, plus film scores such as Carlito’s Way and The Goonies), and sharing insight into their musical heroes and influences (such as bassist Oscar Pettiford and drummer Joseph Jones, who Mosley said, “god fathers of the rhythm section, if you ask me,” plus bassist Ray Brown). Austin talks about a few hip-hop classics he loves from Tone-Loc and The Pharcyde; adding, “you can see the lineage between Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde and Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp a Butterfly).

A full list of albums featured in this episode:

Vince Guaraldi Charlie Brown Christmas; A Boy Named Charlie Brown; Miles Davis The Musings of Miles; John Coltrane Lush Life; Carlitos Way Soundtrack; Goonies; Caravan Art Blakely Jazz Messengers; Sergio Mendes & Brasil ’66 Greatest Hits; Jungle Fire! Pucho; Pharcyde Bizarre Ride II; Sonny Rollins Way Out West; Tone Loc – Loced After Dark

With new episodes premiering every Saturday on Craft Recordings YouTube channel, the new series pairs some of the biggest names in music with classic vinyl albums by “catching” a variety of visiting artists and tastemakers on Craft’s surveillance cameras, as they raid the record bins at the label’s Los Angeles headquarters. As they go through their loot, they’ll review their haul, offering insight into their musical heroes and early influences, while sharing anecdotes along the way. Artists have their pick of Craft’s vast catalog of titles – from foundational jazz and rock albums to beloved soundtracks to punk classics – from such hallowed imprints as Stax, Prestige, Fantasy, Fania, Nitro, and Vanguard.

The series debuted on April 18 with its first three episodes featuring producer Scott Litt (R.E.M., New Order, The Replacements and more), multiple GRAMMY® Award-winning jazz and fusion icon Chick Corea, and internationally celebrated rock band Taking Back Sunday. Since then, episodes with Fran Healy (Travis), Dave Alvin (The Blasters and The Knitters), Robert Trujillo (Metallica), Caroline Spense, and Walshy Fire (Major Lazer) have premiered. Upcoming episodes include: The Manhattan Transfer, The Zombies, Poncho Sanchez, Azar Lawrence, Richard Patrick (Filter), and Nate Mercereau.
