Every year, the Fender Custom Shop Masterbuilders design a collection of unique instruments centered around a singular focus. Past inspiration has been drawn from specific colors and finishes, like 2021’s Surf Green with Envy Collection, or from a unique collaboration, like 2022’s Fender Custom Shop Hot Wheels collection, which was a special collaboration with Mattel, Inc and Hot Wheels™. For 2023, the Fender Custom Shop worked together with Street Tree Revival, an urban wood recycling program who makes every effort to ensure trees don’t end up in landfills. Together they created the California Streetwood Collection.

Each masterbuilder hand-selected their lumber with insight from Street Tree Revival’s John Mahoney, who oversees the recycling program. As with all wood supplied by Street Tree Revival, these trees were safely removed from urban forestry throughout the state of California, salvaging trees lost during storms, disease or natural deterioration. Urban wood, salvaged from the streets, results in beautiful and inspiring ranges of one-of-a-kind guitars and basses, carefully crafted to highlight the distinctive qualities of these incredible woods. CALIFORNIA STREETWOODS ROASTED ASH & ELM P-BASS® – NOS, MASTERBUILT BY JASON SMITH, NATURAL (ONE OF A KIND) ($9,200.00 USD)

The inspiration behind this Streetwoods build was a combination of the early slab body Precision Bass and modern updates to enhance its performance. With a 9.5 radius, medium jumbo frets, lightweight Hipshot tuners and the hi-mass RSD bass bridge, this instrument offers a blend of classic design and contemporary features. By keeping the overall specs simple, such as omitting fret markers, pickguard and control plate, the focus is solely on the stunning figured pearwood fretboard and the one-piece elm top and back of the body. This design choice allows the natural beauty of the wood to shine and creates a visually captivating instrument. NOS oil finish, select roasted ash Ssab body with elm top & back, 1-piece 2A flame pearwood neck with ’75 style “U” back-shape, 9.5″ radius, 20 medium jumbo frets, Custom Shop Josefina hand-wound ’62 P-Bass pickup, vintage wiring, RSD hi-mass bridge, Hipshot® Ultralite™ tuning machines, bone nut, disc string tree, deluxe hardshell case, strap and a Certificate of Authenticity.

CALIFORNIA STREETWOODS HIMALAYAN CEDAR P-BASS® – JOURNEYMAN RELIC®, MASTERBUILT BY VINCENT VAN TRIGT, 2-TONE BROWN STAIN (ONE OF A KIND) ($11,900.00) 

The creation of this bass was fueled by the inspiration drawn directly from the knots, figure and aroma of a magnificent slab of Himalayan cedar. This instantly sparked the vision of creating a bound 50’s P-Bass with an amber stain, reminiscent of the Gretsch® round ups. Beyond the exquisite wood selection, this build showcases custom inlays and a matching pick-up ring. Drawing inspiration from the split pick-up design of a later model P-Bass, these details add a unique and personalized touch to the instrument. However, amidst the exceptional playability and fantastic sound, there is one incredible aspect: the scent. The Himalayan cedar used in this build emits a mesmerizing fragrance known for its calming effects. The thin finish applied allows the natural aroma to permeate through the knots of the wood. It’s worth noting that this particular tree was sourced from Christmas Tree Lane in Altadena, CA, where it has grown since 1883 from seeds brought all the way from Italy. Illuminated annually for Christmas since the 1920s, it carries a rich history and adds another layer of significance to this remarkable bass.
