Former AWOLNATION bassist and multi-instrumentalist Dave Amezcua is debuting his new alt/pop project ZIMINY. The first single, “She (Zoey Deutch),” showcases the heavy influence of 80s melodies and soundscapes, with a modern touch. The single is now premiering on and will be available on all streaming platforms May 8 . More music is on the way from ZIMINY in 2020.

“To me, ‘She (Zoey Deutch)’ is like wrapping yourself in a warm blanket that just came out of the dryer,” Amezcua describes. “It just feels good to play and listen to! I had this lyric idea bouncing around ‘She's my one telephone call,’ which inspired the thought 'who is the one person I'd call from prison?' That really became the concept that birthed the idea for this track. The lovely and talented actress Zoey Deutch really has nothing to do with this song, as my wife truly inspired it. But she's the perfect fictional muse to quench my thirst for 80's song titles with female names. My wife's name is Keesha, it would've never worked!”

“I have found a comfort in sitting down and playing or writing a new tune during this pandemic,” Amezcua said. “It's a distraction from our reality that is currently taking place, and the many people who are experiencing loss. As someone who suffers from crippling anxiety, if I chose to focus on that all day long, I'd just lose it. So music, weather I'm writing, or just listening to something has really helped me escape. Much love to anyone out there who has experienced a loss as a result of this virus, and I hope my music can help lift your day in a positive.”

Los Angeles native and former member of Awolnation, David Amezcua steps back into the spotlight with his latest solo effort, ZIMINY. The first single “She (Zoey Deutch)” harkens back to the beloved tones of 80’s, surf and R&B music, (think Bill Champlin, Beach Boys, Toto) with a modern twist. “Professionally, my instrument has always been bass. But piano has remained as my first love. It feels good to get back to it. Sitting back down to write songs on the piano, the first one I wrote was She (Zoey Deutch), so it felt appropriate to make it my first offering. Ironically this song literally has nothing to do with Zoey Deutch, yet everything at the same time.”

Dave's professional career has typically placed him on the bass, touring with groups like Awolnation and Under The Influence of Giants — but he's always identified as a piano player first. "It's strange it's taken 10 years of playing music professionally to sit in the chair that sort of started it all for me. I would consider the direction of the sound direction-less, or no genre, as I have so many influences that will inspire a different shade of a song.”

Inspirations stem from the 60's-80's with artists like The Beatles, Elton John, The Doors, Toto, David Bowie, Chicago, and singers like Bill Champlin and Luther Vandross. Dave also finds inspiration in a lot current music as well like Cage the Elephant, Tame Impala, and yes, he remains a big fan of his old stomping ground, Awolnation.
