Egg Drop Soup is more than just a catchy, tongue-in-cheek name alluding to that time of the month. The power trio has become known for dishing up punk perfection within the heart of the Los Angeles indie music scene. With Sam Westervelt on bass and lead vox, Olivia Saperstein on background vox and guitar, and Bailey Chapman on drums, this group of superwomxn is set to storm hard once live music returns. For now, they’re fanning the flames by releasing “Or Durves” May 28th as the scrumptious single leading up to a 7’’ split alongside fellow LA rockers Broken Baby, due out at the end of June.
The music video for “Or Durves” is a hilarious sock puppet dramatization of the story behind the song, in which Sam gets fired from her big corporate job and heads deep into rock n’ roll land. “When I was searching for new jobs, the words I got fired today because of my bad attitude popped into my head,” Sam says. The rest was magic. The band (with original drummer Greg Settino) instantly picked up on the power of the tune and recorded it with Travis Pavur at Glassell Park’s Golden Beat Recording Studio.
Nothing says punk rock like DIY: Sam dove deep into the production of the music video, fully immersing herself in the creation of the sets and puppets, learning how to edit greenscreen, and repurposing all the items she’d kept for years without knowing quite why--like an underwire from a bra which becomes headphones in one scene. “I can’t stress the word ‘challenge’ enough, but it was a good challenge which tested my patience, tenacity and follow-through,” Sam says. “There have been moments when I was like how the fuck am I gonna pull this off but I think it’s really important for artists to stretch ourselves and find the comfort in the uncomfortable.” The result is a stunningly funny visual paired to a bitchin’ song, a true testament to female empowerment.
