Darryl Jones was born on the south side of Chicago into a musical family. His father taught him drums and xylophone at 7 years old. But when Jones saw his neighbor, Angus Thomas, playing bass in the school talent show, the nine-year-old foresaw his destiny. With the support of caring parents who instilled a strong work ethic, Jones gained entry to the Chicago music scene playing alongside other Chicago locals including Vincent Wilburn, Jr., who became one of his best friends, and happened to be the nephew of Miles Davis. His reputation for passionately serving the function of the music got people talking. At 21, with the help of Wilburn Jr. Darryl landed a life-changing gig with the legendary jazz icon, with whom he would record and tour over the next five years.

In New York he quickly built a name for himself in the local jazz scene, and Branford Marsalis set up his tryout for Sting. Darryl played on the Dream of the Blue Turtles album and appeared in the documentary film Bring on the Night, and subsequent album and world tour. Always in demand, he also toured and recorded with Herbie Hancock, Eric Clapton, Peter Gabriel and Madonna. In 1993, he was chosen as bassist for the Rolling Stones, replacing founding member Bill Wyman. Darryl has been in the group ever since, appearing on Voodoo Lounge, Bridges to Babylon, A Bigger Bang, and Blue & Lonesome, numerous tours, and subsequent live albums including Stripped, No Security, Live Licks, Light the Fuse, Hyde Park Live, Totally Stripped, Sticky Fingers Live, and Havana Moon, and the Martin Scorsese film and album Shine a Light. When he’s not touring and recording, Darryl is a co-leader on projects, including Stone Raiders with Jean-Paul Bourelly and Will Calhoun, and the new Chi-Town Social Club, with Wilburn, long-time friend, musician/composer Nicholas Tremulis (who serves as music director for the Darry Jones Project), Shawn Christopher (Sonia Dada, Chaka Khan). He also performs with Wilburn Jr. in the Miles Electric Band that revisits and renews the musical innovation of the legendary Miles Davis.

He scored Sundance winner “Love Jones” and recently completed a new scoring project. He continues to write and between tours/recording with the Stones, continues to stretch his boundaries, playing with an eclectic mix of artists including Divinyls, Joe Cocker, Joan Armatrading, Leanne Rimes, Ziggy Marley, and Rod Stewart, Miles Davis alumni Mike Stern, among many others. In 2014 he founded Jones Musical Instruments to produce high-quality basses and guitars, combining artisan craftsmanship and modern technologies for seasoned professionals and dedicated enthusiasts. He envisions a world where music education is available to all, and therefore the company supports programs that bring music into public schools.
