Mai Leisz is a highly prolific bassist and composer who has grown increasingly in-demand since she moved from Sweden to Los Angeles, which has led to her playing on stages all over the world with David Crosby, performing with Jackson Browne, Joan Baez, Jim Keltner, Charles Lloyd, David Foster, and Seal (amongst others), and releasing three albums with her band MaiGroup. So naturally, she wasn’t going to let the current lockdown halt her songwriting process. Along with her husband and collaborator Greg Leisz (Jackson Browne, Eric Clapton, Bill Frisell, Joni Mitchell) on lap steel, Mike Landau on guitar, and Gary Novak on drums, Mai has composed a beautiful new track titled “Skies Above Salkantay” and created a music video, which we’re premiering today.

“‘Skies Above Salkantay’ is a song I wrote with my husband and co-producer Greg Leisz after our trip to Peru last fall,” explains Leisz. “These 3 weeks were life changing and incredibly inspiring. We saw so much untouched land, pristine nature, the condros flying above us in the sky, Milky Way and the Southern Cross over the Andes.”

“I’ve released 3 albums with my Swedish band MaiGroup and since I moved to LA I’ve been missing them a lot,” says Leisz. “Still, I felt that it’s time for me to do something different. It felt like I am ready to open some new doors and enter a new era in my career, where I did not burn any bridges or close any doors to the past but opened new ones here and now. I invited some of my favorite musicians to play with me: Mike Landau on guitar, Greg Leisz on lap steel guitar and Gary Novak on drums. We were all blown away by the synergy we had in the studio. So, there will be more!”
